Cameras have been in use for decades, and the technology has made life for many safer and easier. Manufactures have used closed circuit television or CCTV systems for many years. The cameras can be placed where it is not safe for workers. They are used to monitor the operation and efficiency of equipment. Subsequently, technology has produced higher quality and smaller devices. Today, small surveillance cameras are quite common. They are used by law enforcement, government agencies and private citizens.

Common Everyday Items That Are Actually Miniature Cameras and Recorders

Clothes Hanger

Outdoor Electrical Box

Pen

Plug In Air Deodorizer

Room Sized Air Purifier

Ball Cap

Sunglasses

Key Fob

Buttons

Smoke Detector

Mailbox

Power Adapter

Wrist Watch

Clock

Shower Head

Wall Mirror

Book

Necklace

The list of small surveillance cameras is much longer because, a camera can be made to look like practically anything. However, it merely shows that you can be under surveillance at any time by some very common items. The entire world knows about monitoring babysitters. Then there are the shows that highlight some of the more arcane things people do when they think no one is looking. Cameras are a part of everyone’s lives.

Private investigators use them for gathering information for their clients. Law enforcement personal use them to gather evidence and to prevent crimes. Individuals can use them to monitor their children, partners, or anyone hired to perform work in their homes.

There is any number of reasons to conduct a surveillance operation using small surveillance cameras. The unsuccessful missions are ones where the target knows they are being monitored. The target will then use misdirection.

Therefore, it is important to conceal your activities, and that includes your cameras. People that have committed crimes or have been unfaithful will behave differently. In essence, they become paranoid. Obviously, being presence and recording the act while it is being committed is unlikely. However, there are several options.

Using small surveillance cameras allows for concealment and recovery. Sunglasses clipped on the visor can record a vehicle’s route and occupants. A ball cap with a camera hidden inside can be placed on the back seat. Jewelry hung from the rear view mirror will also record all activity. This is only the start of an investigation though. There is suspicion, investigation and verification.

You will employ the use of cameras because of suspicion, then to gather evidence for verification. You may suspect your friends, cleaning personnel or contractors are helping themselves to your personal property. No one would give a second thought to a clothes hanger on a closet doorknob. In reality, it conceals a camera. When you come home from work, simply remove the memory card and view the images on any computer. Place a key fob camera on a desk, countertop or anywhere. Key fobs are so common they have become invisible.

Homeowners may have cause to be suspicious of neighbors and cars that seem to pass by more than once. Many small surveillance cameras can be disguised as birdhouses, lawn ornaments and electrical boxes. These are ideal for real time monitoring because, they have built in Wi-Fi that allows the signal to transmit to a receiver of your choice. Images can be viewed through either closed circuit television or CCTV, a computer or cellular phone.

Many people are put into situations at work that make them uncomfortable. There may be interviews or counseling sessions where there are no witnesses, and the door to the office is shut. It may come down to your word against theirs. You can record audio and video of the meeting with a pen camera or even a button one. Evidence obtained this way may not be admissible in court. However, providing a copy to opposing counsel may resolve the matter to your satisfaction without the courts involvement. Using small surveillance cameras can gain you the upper hand in negotiations, as well.

There are books that are designed as cameras. The lens is positioned so when the book is placed normally on a bookshelf the room can be monitored. The device is motion activated and will record hours of video on a memory card. These units are ideal when you want to monitor someone else’s office or home. Many bookshelves are for show, as are the books, thus, the device would go unnoticed until you can retrieve it. Drop by your partner or spouse’s office with a small gift.

Plug in air fresheners, with small surveillance cameras inside, never look out of place. Office workers suspect the cleaning crew may have put them in. The cleaning crew thinks the office manager did and so forth. Use this to your advantage. They are self-contained and can record up to 20 hours of video. They only record when they detect motion so they are not wasting batteries and memory. They are ideal for your own home as well.

It can take a lot of time to decide on which kind of camera to use, if you want to secure your property. It is most important to buy a security camera that allows you to see everything at any time. A good night vision security camera will serve this purpose. Many people know security cameras for having super grainy and colorless images that lags in timing. Fortunately, security camera technology has advanced over the years. Security cameras now come in color, with complete motion sensing, and with wide angle focusing. Images are also recorded completely live, with no delays. But the most essential feature that security cameras can have is night vision. This feature magnifies images in the dark by using LEDs.

Night vision is an awesome technology. It can be used in infinite ways. Night vision can be used to view nocturnal wildlife, read text concealed by darkness, and to witness human mischief. The use of night vision is also extremely helpful in the military. Buy a night vision security camera if you are looking to deter burglaries and vandalism. Place this type of camera outside your business or place of residence, to record any nefarious activities taking place.

Night vision security cameras work by a process called thermal imaging and image enhancement. Cameras that use image enhancement are preferred. Image enhancement operates by special lenses that pick up light at a higher frequency than the naked eye, and even thermal imaging. This infrared lighting cannot be seen by the human eye. However this type of invisible wavelength allows night vision security cameras to see far, wide, and clear in low-light settings to total darkness.

On the assumption that this is your first adventure in finding the best night vision security camera, there are some things that you should know. Clear imaging should be the highest priority in selecting a night vision security camera. You need to pick a night vision security camera that has a Lux rating closest to zero. Lux rating is the least possible brightness that a night vision security camera can record visual details.

There are five generations of night vision security cameras; zero, being the least advanced, and four, being the most advanced. You will find all generations being sold, if you look in the right places. Aim to purchase the highest generation possible. While it may be more expensive, the superior quality will be worth it!

Buying a night vision security camera with wide-angle lenses is a must. A night vision security camera with narrow lenses will severely compromise the amount of visual information that can be filmed. Depth is as important as width; a good night vision security camera should record images at least from 100 feet.

It is ideal to own a wireless night vision security camera. But for any reason that you cannot purchase one, it would be wise to by a night vision security camera that has very long cables. Cables that are at least 60 feet are usually included with night vision security cameras. Cables that are of this length will allow you to put your camera in almost any location on your property.

A good night vision security camera should have implanted infrared illumation. Avoid purchasing night vision security cameras that you’ll need to buy additional infrared illuminators. It is inconvenient and expensive.
Pick a night vision security camera that is powerful enough to run every hour, seven days a week. Weakly-powered night vision security cameras will make images dull over time.

Another thing to take into consideration is the external construction of the night vision security camera. A strong metal covering will protect a night vision security camera for many years. The sturdiness of the mount is also important to pay attention to. A flimsy mount will cause the night vision security camera to be vulnerable in the wind. A shaky camera will distort its images.

Add a night vision security camera to your personal or professional protection arsenal. You won’t be disappointed!

You have a few different options to decide if you want to view the images from home or record them and watch them later. Some of those methods are outlined below in more detail to help you decide which path is the right one for you to take.

Record with a Time Lapse DVD Recorder

This particular method is becoming more and more infrequently used because of the new advances in digital recording. It is becoming more and more affordable, so more people are switching to digital recording over DVD recording. The main disadvantage of using a DVD to record everything is that there is a limited amount of space to be able to hold everything. A VCR may be able to record for 24 hours, but they are going to be relatively expensive. Then you are also going to have to change the tapes on a regular basis, while searching through them to find the information that you are looking for. You will have no way to access the images remotely, but if you only need something on a temporary basis, this may be what you are looking for. If you have more than one camera, you are going to have to purchase a multiplexor that will allow you to record multiple cameras at once.

Recording to Your Computer’s Hard Drive

If you have a camera that has a USB connection, you are only going to need the proper software to be able to record the images onto your hard drive. The software that you need will generally come with your web camera that you purchased. If you have a camera that only has video outputs, you are not going to be able to use these particular cameras on your computer unless you have a video capture card. A video capture card will basically convert your analog video signals into the proper USB format. The video capture cards are also going to come with their own software for the camera system. You should not have any problems installing the video capture card, if you have done this type of thing before. Make sure your computer has ample amounts of storage for all of your images. You should typically get around 60GB of hard drive, even for home use.

Upload Your Images

In a lot of situations you will be able to access your images from any computer that has internet access, as long as your security camera software allows it. What happens is that your computer is uploaded with all of the images that were recorded from the server of your internet service provider. Once you enter in your camera’s URL into the web browser you will be able to access all of your images just like if you were at home.

There are even a few camera manufacturers that will offer you the possibility of storing all of your images directly on their server. You will then be able to login and view all of your images on their website. It doesn’t matter if you are going to view the images through your camera manufacturer or ISP; you are going to need a DSL or broadband connection to be able to see everything in real time.

One of the other options is to be able to upload all of your images to your security company and then go through them to be able to view all of the images. You will be able to view the images remotely when you use your security company to store your images. They are also branching into the capability of being able to access your images right from your Smartphone apps.

Use A DVR for Surveillance

If you have multiple security cameras that you want recorded for long periods of time, you should look into a DVR that is specifically for your security system. They will normally have a relatively large hard drive and they are able to be used with a USB camera. They are also going to come with more high-end software so you will have access to their array of features. Even though these units may end up costing a little more in the beginning they are going to continue to drop in price as the years go by. They are normally used in a commercial or industrial setting, but they can be used pretty much wherever the need arises.

This statistic breaks down to over 9,000,000 property crimes in 2010. While data shows property crime has dropped 9.3 percent since 2006, homeowners should actively protect their home, family and possessions by installing home surveillance systems.

Home surveillance systems are designed to continually monitor a designated space, and in the unfortunate event of a property crime, these security systems can provide valuable images and other information to law enforcement officers. Home surveillance systems are available in a wide variety of designs ranging from simplistic to vast security networks that monitor every square inch of a home or property.

Video Home Surveillance Systems

There are three main types of video surveillance systems available to consumers, which include: hidden camera systems, CCTV home surveillance systems and wireless camera surveillance systems. While each of these surveillance systems has the uniformed goal of monitoring the activity in and around the home, how this goal is achieved can vary.

Hidden camera systems beckon images of spy movies as its use has been glamorized by Hollywood and private detectives. A hidden camera surveillance system is designed to monitor the happenings in and around a property without being visible to onlookers. These systems can be installed within walls, picture frames or within outdoor bushes. If you desire a home surveillance system without advertising the fact the premises is being monitored, then a hidden camera systems may be the ideal choice.

CCTV home surveillance systems, which stands for Closed Circuit Television, are perhaps the most common home surveillance systems utilized in residences and businesses; however, it is also one of the more expensive options. CCTV home surveillance systems utilize single or multiple cameras positioned throughout a property and continually record video and store these images within a digital recording device. This type of home surveillance system gained its name by only streaming video to limited monitors or receiving devices, and not to the public. Like other forms of video home surveillance systems, there are a plethora of camera and recording options.

Wireless camera surveillance systems allow the most flexibility when it comes to visually monitoring your property. These cameras can be placed in practically any area, and after being secured, these wireless cameras transmit video wirelessly to its receiver. Wireless home surveillance systems typically cost less than the previous video surveillance systems, and its installation is simplified so novice installers can set up this security measure without having to contact professionals. Of course, there are a wide variety of wireless video surveillance systems on the market that range from simplistic cameras to state-of-the-art recording machines. If you desire video surveillance, but don’t wish to deal with wiring your home or business, then a wireless camera home surveillance system may be the perfect choice for you.

Alarm Systems

Perhaps the most common type of home surveillance systems is through alarm systems. Alarm home surveillance systems have been available for many years, and throughout the decades these once simplistic and limited security systems have evolved into technologically advanced and intricate systems capable of monitoring not only the security of a home, but also carbon monoxide levels.

Alarm systems are available in a variety of styles; however, most systems utilize window and door alarms. When the system is activated, it continually monitors these entrance points. If a door is opened or a window is broken while the alarm is activated, an ear-piercing alarm goes off and the authorities are immediately contacted. More advanced alarm systems connect the system to a live operator that speaks over an intercom system informing the intruder authorities have been contacted.

The use of motion detectors is quite popular among home surveillance systems. These small devices are placed in the corners of rooms, and when the home surveillance system is activated, it monitors each room for motion. If motion is detected, the alarm is triggered and law enforcement is notified. While this is an effective means of keeping your home safe when away or sleeping, if you have animals or small children who enjoy sneaking out of their rooms at night, you may encounter unwanted false alarms.

Benefits of Home Surveillance Systems

Perhaps one of the most notable benefits of home surveillance systems is the peace of mind it brings homeowners. Knowing their property is continually monitored and protected against theft can help ease worries. Installing home surveillance systems also reduces the likelihood of being burglarized, especially if the presence of security monitoring is visible, as criminals understand these systems are effective means at not only alerting police of their intrusion, but also recording their identity.
